Key routes to a degree:

Certified and Senior Certified Funeral Minister

Certified Funeral Minister (CFM)

The Certified Funeral Minister (CFM) designation is a specialist award. The object of the award is to recognise the competency of those who preside at funeral services. It is open both to those for whom this work is part of a faith-based ministry and also to those whose approach is informed by humanist, atheist or agnostic belief. Those applying must already have experience of funeral ministry - this is not a course of initial training.

The award is examined in two parts:

Part 1:

A reflective essay of around 5,000 words. This will address an aspect or aspects of your particular funeral ministry. Guidance and supervision is offered by experienced funeral ministers. The reflective essay/thesis must also demonstrate that the candidate has a sound understanding of the concepts of the grieving process and managing bereavement issues in a diversity of pastoral situations. The candidate should also be able to demonstrate knowledge of external counselling agencies available to aid the bereaved.

Part 2:

A video recording demonstrating your funeral ministry. Although a recording of one or more services is desirable, we recognise that this may not always be possible. As a result, it is acceptable for the recording to take place without the presence of a congregation. The examined elements will be presentation, clarity of diction, management of the service process and general impression. The recording may be submitted on either VHS videotape or DVD. Reflecting the fact that all assessment takes place in London, the encoding on the recording must be suitable for the UK region.

Candidates must also submit a curriculum vitæ giving details of their experience in funeral ministry and two testimonials certifying competence from funeral directors.

Certified Senior Funeral Minister (CSFM)

The Certified Senior Funeral Minister (CSFM) designation is a specialist award. The object of the award is to recognise the advanced competency of those who preside at funeral services. It is open both to those for whom this work is part of a faith-based ministry and also to those whose approach is informed by humanist, atheist or agnostic belief.

Those applying must already hold either the award of CFM, or have considerable experience of funeral ministry - this is not a course of initial training.

To qualify for the award of CSFM, candidates must demonstrate to the examiners by the submission of a comprehensive portfolio an area or areas of specialism within their ministry, the objective of which is to promote an advanced professional funeral ministry.

The portfolio must demonstrate clear competence in chosen specialist areas and a commitment to ongoing professional development.

Candidates for CSFM who do not already hold the award of CFM will, unless exemption is granted, be required to first enter for parts 1 and 2 of the CFM examination.
