Doctorate degrees
Entry criteria
The doctorate is a program within the University that is structured around either a coursework-based approach added to a single research project, or (European style) that depends on a single research project incorporating original research alone. It is possible to give research a greater or possibly slightly lesser weighing within the program, or to submit a series of smaller research projects in lieu of a single dissertation.
In addition to the traditional Ph.D., other doctoral titles such as the D.B.A. are classified as pracitioner doctorates, and have equal academic standing. The practitioner doctorate, as its name implies, is particularly focussed on the workplace as a learning environment and source of experiences that may form the foundation for work within the program. The methodology for assessment of these degrees is built on the assessment of learning in the workplace through portfolio and supervised practicum, allied to a dissertation on a relevant topic.
Doctorate degrees available
Ph.D. (and equivalent professional doctorates) by dissertation
>>Doctorates by dissertation
Ph.D. (and equivalent professional doctorates) by community-based learning (projects)
>>Doctorates via community-based learning
Ph.D. (and equivalent professional doctorates) via Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning and dissertation
The University's A.P.E.L. program allows adults with significant prior learning gained either through incomplete or sub-degree studies, or through informal routes, to earn a doctorate through the presentation and assessment of a documented portfolio of prior learning experiences and (in all cases) the submission of a dissertation or equivalent project.
See our A.P.E.L. page for the details of this process.
Doctoral students transferring from other institutions
We also have an accelerated provision for those who have completed the majority of their doctoral program requirements elsewhere but either have not completed their dissertation (ABD), or whose dissertation has been rejected pending revision, and who for whatever reason feel that they cannot continue at their present institution. We will require the dissertation itself or necessary revisions to be completed in the course of our program, as well as a reflective context paper that establishes the role of the doctoral process in the student's lifelong learning. The student may appoint one or more Doctoral Mentors, as well as convening a panel of peers and external specialists to examine the work when it is ready to submit.
Ph.D. and Higher Doctorates (Litt.D., LL.D., Sc.D.) by Published Work
A further route to the Ph.D. is by submission of published work. Candidates for this award will be required to meet a standard equivalent to that set for the Ph.D by other routes.
Those doctorates designated as higher doctorates (Litt.D., LL.D., and Sc.D.) are obtained through submission of published work. The higher doctorate is an earned rather than an honorary award and represents a standard significantly beyond the Ph.D. The award will be available to those who have published substantial work representing an original and significant contribution to their discipline, and interdisciplinary work can also be considered. Submission is made via a portfolio of this work together with an accompanying paper that places the work in its context. For discussion of submission for a higher doctorate, please contact the University using the details given here. Details of these degrees, eligibility and requirements are given in Regulation 4.
The degree of D.Mus. by composition is also available by published work (see below).
