Libertarian Library Online Project (LLOP)

The University's ongoing Libertarian Library Online Project (LLOP) aims to collect together online resources exploring different aspects of libertarian philosophy in a convenient single-source location, thus providing a comprehensive virtual library of libertarianism. As well as providing access to complete texts of such key writers as Henry David Thoreau, Ludwig von Mises and Adam Smith via online libraries, it includes links to libertarian organizations, political parties and to thousands of shorter articles and papers. All resources are free at the point of delivery and fully digitized for easy searching and printing. Resources are selected and annotated by the LLOP Librarians.

The language of the Project is English; we note that there are also valuable resources in other languages outside the scope of the Project.

The interpretation of libertarianism taken in the Project is wide, although not all those listed here interpret it within such broad boundaries. In particular, links are provided to left-libertarian, right-libertarian and non-partisan sources. No link should be taken to indicate either endorsement of that organization by the University, or vice versa.

Archive of Free Life Magazine

Free Life was the magazine of the LA between 1979 and 2003. It takes its title from the similarly-named magazine published by Auberon Herbert in the late nineteenth-century.

Free Life Vol 1 no 1 appeared in Winter 1979 and ran on a quarterly basis until mid-1982, when a split in the LA caused the creation of two identically-named groups, each claiming to be a continuation of the original. Both groups then published their own versions of Free Life simultaneously.

The smaller LA group has provided electronic copies of its editions of Free Life from Vol 3 no 3 onwards, which can be found at www.la-articles.org.uk. This online archive runs up to Vol 7 no 1, produced in the mid-1980s. This group appears then to have ceased to publish Free Life, or at least has not made further editions available in digital format.

The larger LA group, under the direction of the late Dr. Chris Tame, produced further issues of Free Life during the period up to 1991, but these are not available in digital format at the present time. With Issue 15 in November 1991, Dr Sean Gabb took over as Editor. Up until its final issue in 2003, Free Life was the LA's journal of comment. At its best, it was often hard-hitting, elegant in a quintessentially English manner, and sometimes very funny. In its earlier years, it also attracted an interesting variety of classified advertisers of a type now less often seen.

From 2003, Free Life was effectively replaced by Free Life Commentary, a parallel series begun by Dr. Gabb in 1997 and which continues today, as well as (from 2007) by the LA's blog. Those wishing to receive FLC free by email are directed to Dr. Gabb's website at www.seangabb.co.uk.
