Register of Independent Music Colleges in Britain and Ireland

The Register is a UK-based independent directory (established in 2003 and transferred to EAU in 2007) of examining and membership organizations for musicians, many of them small and long-standing, which exist outside state control and funding. Contact details and a brief description are provided for each entry.

This Register is based on that of the former Association of British Music Colleges and on those independent institutions listed in the book "Academical Dress of Music Colleges and Societies of Musicians in the United Kingdom" by Nicholas Groves and John Kersey, published by the Burgon Society. If you have updates, additions or corrections to this information, which is provided in good faith, please make contact. The Register is maintained on a voluntary basis by the CER for the purposes of providing information to the public and in particular to those who may be interested in membership or examinations offered by the organizations concerned.

Institutions in this Register are independent in the sense that they are not under the direct control and funding of government; state institutions, which are commonly included in standard directories, are omitted here, as are institutions which do not offer their own awards. Some of the institutions listed are proprietary; others are registered charities, societies or bodies under a Royal Charter. The division is into two main sections; examining institutions, which award their own diplomas after examination or assessment, and membership institutions, which may award postnominal letters but do not formally examine or assess applicants for them. In some cases the division is not clear-cut, for example in institutions where the grade of membership is available without examination, but higher awards are examined.

Several related overseas institutions are included at the end of the Register.

Except where otherwise stated, the contact person given is the Head of the institution concerned.

Warning to the public

The following advisory warning is issued to the public:

"The Honourable Company of Organists", Canada
Website: www.thehco.ca
The actions of this institution, specifically in appointing to and then rescinding several fellowships in a short space of time without due process, cause us to regard it as a bogus institution without serious intent. The postnominals "FHCO" used by this institution for unexamined membership should not be confused with the postnominals "FRCO" used by the Royal College of Organists for its highest examined diploma in organ performance. Although this body claims to have been founded in 2003, as far as can be established its first appearance on the internet was not until late 2006.
