Newsletter Issue #3 - September 2007

Editorial

Welcome to the online newsletter of European-American University, a new online university that will launch to the public later this year.

Progress at the University continues apace. Executive Council has had preliminary discussions with several organizations in various countries which we hope will become our International Partners, institutions teaching bespoke programs that lead to University-validated degrees. The opportunity to become an International Partner is one which we anticipate will prove attractive to many teaching colleges and organizations, since the University is happy to work closely with each Partner to ensure that the programs offered are tailored exactly to local needs and market demand.

Partners are responsible for such matters as program delivery, the appointment of tutors for program delivery, the recruitment of students and compliance with local laws and regulations on the delivery of independent postsecondary education programs. Equally, the University seeks to offer not only the necessary oversight of the relationship to ensure academic standards but also more general support to enable the partnership to flourish. We invite potential new Partners interested in joining our worldwide consortium to get in touch to discuss their needs.

Our contacts in the world of distance education report that more and more people are becoming interested in the possibilities of online learning. At European-American University, the online environment is central to our vision of the university of the Information Age. Nowadays the concept of study over the internet and via correspondence is being seen by many employers and individuals as fully equal in merit to campus-based education, and given the high costs of most mainstream providers, as almost always a preferable choice.

Administration changes
The administration underwent a key change in August, when Andrew Linley stepped down as President to take on the new position of Vice-President for Development and Quality Assurance and John Kersey moved from overall Vice-President to President. Both retain their previous research responsibilities. In addition, Kathleen Lucia moves from Administrator to the new position of Vice-President for Public Relations and Administration.

These changes strengthen the team of senior officers and reflect the greater degree of specialization needed in the management structure at this time.

A group of educators offers us the chance to Explore Informal Education and Lifelong Learning. We find their site both useful and persuasive. In particular, we recommend A Brief Introduction to Holistic Education by Ron Miller.

Distinguished author Charles Leadbeater offers us a keynote thought that encapsulates what European-American University is all about:
"We must move away from a view of education as a rite of passage involving the acquisition of enough knowledge and qualifications to acquire an adult station in life. The point of education should not be to inculcate a body of knowledge, but to develop capabilities: the basic ones of literacy and numeracy as well as the capability to act responsibly towards others, to take initiative and to work creatively and collaboratively. The most important capability, and the one which traditional education is worst at creating, is the ability and yearning to carry on learning. Too much schooling kills off a desire to learn.... Schools and universities should become more like hubs of learning, within the community, capable of extending into the community... More learning needs to be done at home, in offices and kitchens, in the contexts where knowledge is deployed to solve problems and add value to people's lives."
