Michael Walsh studied singing and organ at the College of St Nicholas at the Royal School of Church Music and later Trinity College of Music where he was awarded the prestigious Ricordi Opera Prize for conducting and two others for choir training and research. His main performing interest has always been in sacred music, and after eighteen years as Head of Music of Bishop Luffa CofE Comprehensive School and a Lay Vicar with Chichester Cathedral Choir (and more recently Portsmouth Cathedral Choir) he now divides his time between composing, acting as a freelance organist, running MusicPrint, his own music engraving and typesetting business, and most recently as Design Director of the Better Book Company. He is a member of the Religious Society of St Simon, which is affiliated to The Liberal Catholic Apostolic Church and to the Society for Humanistic Potential.

Michael’s compositions cover a wide range, including two full-scale musicals for school choirs and orchestra (both of which were highly praised in the Times Educational Supplement), incidental music for A Midsummer Night’s Dream, As you like it and the music for The Mysteries (in a kind of medieval/rock fusion). He is most at home in composing works for Cathedral and Parish choirs. His setting of the Preces and Responses, (published by OUP) composed in 1982 for Alan Thurlow, is now widely performed by Cathedral choirs. He has composed sixteen Mass settings and his Latin Mass of the Holy Trinity for unaccompanied double choir is now regularly sung by the choirs of Chichester, Canterbury, Portsmouth and Worcester Cathedrals. Settings of the Preces & Responses and Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis for men’s voices composed for Jeremy Suter at Carlisle Cathedral are also now performed at St Paul’s, Portsmouth and Birmingham Cathedrals. His early music editions (published by Oxford University Press) of the Preces and Responses by John Reading and the Sixth Evening Service by Thomas Weelkes, together with his research into John Holmes and William Deane, have ensured him a worthy reputation as a scholar of early music and earned him a Research Fellowship of Trinity College of Music and a Doctorate in Theology (Religious Music) from Geneva Theological College.

In 1998, Portsmouth Cathedral Choir gave first performances of his Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis in the Aeolian Mode and a setting of George Herbert’s poem Love bade me welcome, both of which were well received. Festal settings of Te Deum, Jubilate, Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis have also been commissioned by the chamber choir Chichester Voices during recent three years.

As a countertenor, Michael has taken part in many choral recordings and recital tours to France, Germany, Switzerland, Estonia, Norway and Denmark, the latter when he was assistant to Martin How for the Løgumkloster International Church Music Festival in 1986. He has made several appearances on TV and radio, including conducting Songs of Praise from Boxgrove Priory and Where Stones Speak and Sunday Half Hour on Radio 4. Some years ago, BBC TV’s South Today featured him prominently in an interview about an anthem he had composed for the annual open air St. Roche’s Day pilgrimage and service held on Trundle Hill to the north of Chichester. Michael has been invited to be Director of Music for this service for over ten years.

From 2006, Michael has been Conductor of the St. Richard Singers, a well-respected chamber choir based in Chichester, having previously conducted them from 1976-1989. For 25 years he has been Musical Director of the Chichester Amateur Operatic Society and was recently awarded life membership of the Society and a long service medal from NODA. At the start of 2005 he was invited to become Artistic Director and Conductor of the Chichester Symphony Orchestra. In past years, Michael has conducted many of the ‘Concerts from Scratch’ as part of the Chichester Festivities, Fauré’s Requiem for Kosovo in September 1999 (which raised £6,000+), the millennium Messiah in Chichester Cathedral in the BT Voices for Hospices series and has recently been invited to conduct a large-scale musical event (probably Mozart Requiem) in aid of the St Richard’s Hospital Cancer Care Unit.

In 2003, his contribution to church music was recognised by the award of an Honorary Membership of the Guild of Church Musicians (HonGCM) which he received that December at Lambeth Palace. He was also honoured to have been commissioned to compose a setting of the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis for the use of St Paul’s Cathedral Choir. It was first performed on July 19th 2003 year to great acclaim.
