Regulation 9 - Academical Dress


1. General
I. The University prescribes academical dress as follows. References to the generic academic dress patterns used by other institutions (which is the customary language of robemakers) do not imply any connection between the University and those institutions.

II. Only graduates of the University may wear its academical dress.

III. A form of authorisation to purchase academical dress, together with details of robemakers, may be obtained from the University.

2. Associates, Licentiates, Certificates, Senior Certificates
IV. Gown: A gown of the same pattern as a Bachelor of Arts in the University of Toronto in black stuff.

V. Hood:
1. Associates: A hood of the same pattern as a Doctor of Philosophy in the University of Toronto in black silk, lined to a depth of 1.5" with magenta silk. The cowl is bound half an inch old gold silk.
2. Licentiates: A hood of the same pattern as a Doctor of Philosophy in the University of Toronto in black silk, lined to a depth of 3" with magenta silk. The cowl is bound half an inch old gold silk.
3. Certificates: A hood of the same pattern as a Doctor of Philosophy in the University of Toronto in black silk. The cowl is bound half an inch magenta silk.
4. Senior Certificates A hood of the same pattern as a Doctor of Philosophy in the University of Toronto in black silk. The cowl is bound one inch magenta silk.

3. Bachelors
VI. Gown: A gown of the same pattern as a Bachelor of Arts in the University of Toronto in black stuff.

VII. Hood: A hood of the same pattern as a Doctor of Philosophy in the University of Toronto in black silk, lined to a depth of 5" with magenta silk. The cowl is bound half an inch old gold silk.

4. Postgraduate Certificates (also the Dip.T.E.S.O.L.)
VIII. Gown: A gown of the same pattern as a Bachelor of Arts in the University of Toronto in black stuff.

IX. Hood: A hood of the same pattern as a Doctor of Philosophy in the University of Toronto in black silk, lined to a depth of 3" with magenta silk. The cowl is bound half an inch old gold silk. The cape is bound on all edges with gold cord.

3. Postgraduate Diplomas
VIII. Gown: A gown of the same pattern as a Bachelor of Arts in the University of Toronto in black stuff.

IX. Hood: A hood of the same pattern as a Doctor of Philosophy in the University of Toronto in black silk, lined to a depth of 5" with magenta silk. The cowl is bound half an inch old gold silk. The cape is bound on all edges with gold cord.

X. Hat: A black mortar board

4. Masters
XI. Gown: A gown of the same pattern as a Master of Arts in the University of Toronto, in black silk.

XII. Hood: A hood of the same pattern as a Doctor of Philosophy in the University of Toronto in black silk, fully lined with magenta silk. The cowl is bound half an inch old gold silk (for the M.Phil., there is an additional binding of half an inch scarlet silk laid next to the old gold). The cape is bound on all edges with gold cord.

XIII. Hat: A black mortar board

5. Doctors:
XIV. Gown: A gown of the same pattern as a Doctor of Philosophy in the University of Toronto in scarlet cloth, with the facings covered with magenta silk. The sleeves are lined with the same magenta silk, turned back to show 3” magenta silk and fastened with an old gold silk cord and button.

XV. In undress, doctors may wear a gown of the same pattern as a Master of Arts in the University of Toronto in black silk.

XVI. Hood: A hood of the same pattern as a Doctor of Philosophy in the University of Toronto in scarlet cloth, fully lined with magenta silk. The cowl is bound half an inch old gold silk. The cape is bound on all edges with gold cord.

XVII. Hat: A scarlet Tudor bonnet with a gold tassel.

6. University ties
XVIII. The University Crested Tie shall be of navy blue silk or polyester repp, with the University coat of arms as a repeating pattern.

XIX. The University Striped Tie shall be of navy blue silk or polyester repp, with repeating wide stripes of magenta and old gold.

7. Silk
XX. Artificial silk may be substituted for silk if desired.
