David Ricardo School of Business

The University's David Ricardo School of Business offers programs at the bachelor's, master's and doctoral levels entirely by nonresident distance learning using flexible non-traditional methods of study and assessment.

Who was David Ricardo?

David Ricardo (1772-1823) was an English political economist and, together with Adam Smith and Thomas Malthus, part of the influential group of classical economists of the Enlightenment era. Ricardo was a highly successful businessman and financier (retiring at the age of 41 due to the wealth he had accumulated).

Ricardo held strong humanitarian beliefs (although born Jewish, he became a Unitarian, which religious movement was a major influence on the origins of the Society for Humanistic Potential, founder of European-American University) and in keeping with these beliefs served his country as a Member of Parliament between 1819 and his death.

Ricardo was an adult learner. While on vacation in 1799, he read a copy of Adam Smith's The Wealth of Nations. He had never read or studied economics previously. He published his first article on economics at the age of 37. In 1817, he produced his masterwork, Principles of Political Economy and Taxation, which is today regarded as a leading authority of its time on the topics of rent, profit and wages. You can read the book in full text online at the Library of Economics and Liberty here.
